Fox:
Hi Tratax, Whats the latest news on the upcoming Psemu Pro for Windows?
Tratax: Well
.. I have the R3000 emulated using dynamic recompiling, and it is
a LOT faster than the non recompiling version. The GPU is currently
emulated using 'software rendering' just the PSEmu DOS routines
converted to DirectDraw. It does not have CDROM routines yet, because
I would like to have the latest PSEmu DOS CDROM routines, not the
old ones.
Fox:
Right, what the whole Emulator world is asking, is the last DOS
version of the PSemu emulator gonna be released, the one duddie
was working on?
Tratax: Well
.. you probably dont WANT that version, because it is crashing all
the time now. Duddie has been using it to get Tekken3, one of the
games using the new playstation libraries, to work but it broke
compatibility with 'older' games.
There are two
possible things to do now:
1) Work on
fixing the 'old' DOS version, improving graphics a bit, and releasing
this one.
2) Continue
on the new Win95 version, using all the things we learned from the
old DOS version.
I like the
second option because the DOS version is going to be dropped anyway.
This DOES mean that we have to wait a while, because the Win95 version
needs more work before it can run anything.
If this takes
too much time, I will go for option 1.
Fox:
Whats the speed like on the Psemu Pro and will 3dfx be supported?
if so what will the differences be if you have a 3dfx card?
Tratax: Well,
3dfx is probably going to be the best way to run the emulator. GLIDE
has some unique features that speed up graphics emulation gigantic.
Direct3D will be an improvement too, but not as much as 3dfx will.
About speed .. I am testing with 'the raiden project' menu, and
it runs super smooth on my P2-333 with Voodoo2 .. lets say about
10x better than PSEmu DOS ? But it will differ from game to game
.. some will be fast, some will be just as slow.
Fox:
So currently you are now the main author of the Psemu project, will
duddie still help with the Psemu Pro and will you ever take the
reign of the DOS version?
Tratax: I helped
Duddie with some simple things in the DOS version .. that VESA20
lineair framebuffer was my idea (sorry, but it sped up a LOT). All
technology learned from the DOS version will be used for the Win95
version. Problem is, the Win95 version is a lot more difficult to
program because of the recompiler.
Fox:
What are your thoughts on Duddie leaving ?
Tratax: Well
.. what can I say ? Emulation is a hobby, so if you can get a good
job that means giving up your hobby you just have to do it. You
also have to realise that Duddie has been working for about a year
on PSEmu. After a while you start to get bored, and want to do something
else.
Fox:
Tekken 3 was working on the Psemu (DOS) version, any idea's whether
it will work on the new version, and is it true that one of your
ambitions is to get Grand Tursssimo running 100% on the emulator
by Xmas ? :)
Tratax: Gran
Turismo is the best racing game I ever played. I do want this game
to be running on my system (P2-333 Voodoo2) at about full speed
during X-Mas. Since Tekken3 and Gran Turismo both use the same library
set, once one game works, the other should almost work too. The
DOS technology is used in the Win95 version so once we have CDROM
routines ported, it should be as compatible as the DOS version (meaning
it will run Tekken3).
Fox:
Whats currently left to be done until your satisfied that the emulator
is ready to go out?
Tratax: Direct3D
support (only 3dfx and BAD software rendering now), CDROM routines,
and some minor fixes in the GTE. I just hope this wont take too
long, but time flies.
There will
be a new version in July, I promise.
